Accelerating Interest
Despite the Xmas period being upon us, we have established many new contacts over the last three weeks, which will ensure that not only will our 2010 season be the biggest so far, but also will be the most varied, with a considerable influx of new players and interesting venues.
This has mainly come about from careful 'mailshot' marketting and newsletter article placement, covering as much of the Suffolk Coastal area as possible.
Many thanks to existing members who have 'tipped us off' on various locations, which are coming to fruition and should be ready for the start of the new league programme.

Woodbridge Town Petanque Club - Update
Having put out a request for interested persons in the Woodbridge area to come forward and form the Woodbridge Town Petanque Club, in readiness for the forthcoming 2010 season, we are pleased to report that only 3 places remain out of the original 8 and these will be filled on a first come, first served basis.
If you are at all interested, please get in touch.

Review of the 2009 Season
From 9 teams last year to 17 for the 2009 season, an 89% increase, this season has seen many more players take part (153 players in a total of 82 matches). Matches have been, in the main, on the 'prefered' Sunday timeslot but many matches have been moved around and fitted into the overall league programme by all teams involved but at least were all completed by the time we had the End of Season Play-Offs.
Many thanks to Virginia and Carl and indeed all the staff at The Star Inn, Wenhaston who made us all feel so very welcome earlier today, by hosting our seasons play-off event. They are sure to be a very welcome addition to our leagues set-up next season, judging by the players they had play a few games against us at the end of the afternoon.
I'd like to thank you all for playing and taking part this year. There are so many I could thank personally but I fear I might miss a few, so thank you to all those who did help, you know who you are. I hope you all enjoyed this season and are eager to re-register for the 2010 season, I already have the Registration Forms if you need them.
Congratulations to the teams that made this years play-offs and thank you to those of you who didnt but came along to The Star to cheer on the ones that did. It just goes to show the spirit in our league that so many of our leagues players turned up to support something that they themselves weren't actually involved in.
Special mention to The Golden Key Snape for winning the Leagues Best Newcomers title and to the Kings Head Laxfield for getting the 'Getting Most People Playing' Award. There are certificates for ALL teams for their 2009 final positions and those of you who couldn't pick them up on the day, will receive them via post over the next week.
2010 promises to be even bigger as our recruitment campaign goes into over-drive between now and February, so get out there and be looking around for new players, teams and venues and at the same time get yourselves organised and re-registered as soon as possible.
Once again, thank you,
Simon

Walberswick & Ipswich - 2009 Grand Final
Having witnessed the third/fourth place play-off go to a deciding game, both The Bell Inn Walberswick & Ipswich PC '09 lined up to face each other in this years climax to the 2009 season.
Both sides had had the best two divisional records in their groups and had won each group respectively, thus earning the coveted Grand Final play-off spots. With around 50 to 60 interested spectators, the match got under way and again some tight tactical play saw the match stand at 1-1 by the half-time point. Ipswich then edged ahead in the 3rd pair, only to see Walberswick peg them back in the fourth game.
2-2 now and another decider required.
Ipswich, having 5 players, put together the two players who had only played the once so far in this match, whilst The Bell put on the pair who had taken the match to 2-2. Unfortunately for The Bell, they never got going in the game and dropped to a 13-0 loss, handing Ipswich PC '09 the 2009 Suffolk Coastal title.
A fine match between two very good sides, who had shown the reasons why they had got to the Grand Final in the first place, by good use of teamwork and tactics.

'Seasiders' claim bronze medal position
At the neutral setting of The Star Inn, Wenhaston earlier today, The Three Horseshoes North Cove, (qualifiers by virtue of their best 'runners-up' record this season), crossed swords with Aldeburgh Boules Club, in the Suffolk Coastal Petanque League 3rd/4th place play-off match.
Evenly match throughout the early exchanges, at half-time the score was locked at 1 game all. By the end of the second round, the match was still delicately poised at 2-2. In normal events this would be a drawn match, but today we required a winner. Therefore a tie-breaker game was required.
Despite the considerable best efforts and skill shown by the North Cove side, Aldeburgh managed to edge ahead and finish the match 3-2.
Well played to both sides in what was to be the pre-cursor to the main event.

End Of Season Play-Off line-up confirmed
Following completion of the relevant matches earlier today, we can confirm the line-up for the 2009 End Of Season Play-Offs, due to be held on Sunday 27th September at The Star Inn, Wenhaston
Grand Final (Playing off for the 2009 Suffolk Coastal League Championship) with 2pm start approx
Bell Inn Walberswick (Blyth Division) v Ipswich PC'09 (Orwell Division)
Third/Fourth Place Play-Off with 12.15 start approx
Aldeburgh Boules Club (Deben Division) v Three Horseshoes North Cove (Blyth Division)
Final Play-Off place determined
With three divisional winners now decided, the remaining play-off place is awarded to the best divisional runner-up from the three divisions.
As one divisions teams played a different amount of matches, the formula applied will be the total league points secured divided by how many league matches that team played. (This gives the points per match ratio with the highest ratio therefore being the best record).
Divisional Runners-Up
BLYTH - Three Horseshoes North Cove 14 points from 10 matches = 1.4 pts per match
ORWELL - Hollesley Shepherd & Dog 14 points from 10 matches = 1.4 pts per match
DEBEN - Suivre Les Boules Playford 11 points from 8 matches = 1.375 pts per match
From this we can see that North Cove and Hollesley need to be seperated by the next best differentiator, ie games difference (the amount of games a team won minus the amount of games a team lost, the highest + difference the better)
Games Difference
Three Horseshoes North Cove - Games For 26 Games Against 14 = Games Difference +12
Hollesley Shepherd & Dog - Games For 21 Games Against 15 = Games Difference +6
Therefore the fourth play-off spot is awarded to Three Horseshoes North Cove

Aldeburgh earn divisional title
Whilst the Bell Inn Walberswick and Ipswich PC'09 had both secured their respective divisional titles and play-off spots, going into todays matches, the Deben Division was the only group that hadn't decided the title.
Aldeburgh needed to avoid defeat at home against The Exiles Bealings to snatch the divisional championship but a defeat would see Suivre Les Boules Playford as the group winners. In the end Aldeburgh ran out 3-1 victors and thereby win the group by one point, earning their Play-Off spot in the 3rd/4th play-off match in two weeks time.

Who will be the leagues' best runner-up?
As you should already know, the fourth place in the play-offs will be awarded to the team who is the best divisional runner-up, based upon how many league points they accumulate divided by how many matches they played in their group. (This is because one group will only play 8 matches whilst two divisions teams play 10 matches).
Current Contenders
Blyth - Three Horseshoes North Cove....13 points from 9 matches
Blyth - Harbour Inn Southwold....11 points from 9 matches
Orwell - Hollesley Shepherd & Dog....14 points from 10 matches
Deben - Suivre Les Boules Playford....11 points from 8 matches
Deben - The Exiles Bealings....8 points from 7 matches
(Aldeburgh Boules Club cannot be runners-up in their group regardless of their final match result).

Deben Division still up for grabs
One division remains unclinched as we go into the final round of matches. The Deben Division has been probably the tightest group with as many as 4 of the teams only 2 matches ago, all having the chance of being 'top dog'.
However recent results have sorted matters out......but only a bit.
Suivre Les Boules Playford sit top with 11 points from 8 matches (but have completed their programme). Second is Aldeburgh Boules Club (10 from 7 matches) and third is The Exiles Bealings with 8 from 7 matches.
By a quirk of fate, the remaining match for Aldeburgh is at home to The Exiles at the Moot Arena piste. If Aldeburgh avoid defeat, they will be crowned group winners but if the Bealings team wins, Aldeburgh will be pushed to third place and Playford will be the divisional champions, thereby qualifying for the play-offs.

Orwell Divisional title secured by Ipswich PC '09
Due to their 4-0 away win at Rushmere Rugby Rollers new venue of the Bramford Cock PH, Ipswich PC '09 clinched the Orwell Division title despite them and Hollesley still having one match left each.
Mathematically even if Hollesley won 4-0 and Ipswich lost by the same scoreline, both sides would be level on points but Ipswich would have a far superior 'games difference' (ie the difference between the number of games won less the number of games lost).
So congratulations to them as we now know 50% of the play-off contenders, with the Bell Inn Walberswick having already won the Blyth section.

Walberswick secure play-off spot
Blyth Division 22nd August
Last Saturday saw The Bell Walberswick travel to the Kings Head Laxfield for not one, but two, away fixtures in a 'double-header' against Laxfield A and Laxfield Lovelies respectively. Obviously conditions favoured Walberswick and they recorded a 4-0 win over the A team and a 3-1 triumph against the Kings Head ladies team.
These two wins put them clear at the head of the table with 8 wins from 9 matches and a total of 16 league points. Second placed Three Horseshoes North Cove have two matches left but cannot catch up the 5 point margin between them and the Bell.
Therefore its congratulations to The Bell as they have secured the Blyth Divisional title this season and will be one of the four teams contesting the End of Season Play-Offs.

Therefore its congratulations to The Bell as they have secured the Blyth Divisional title this season and will be one of the four teams contesting the End of Season Play-Offs.

The Greyhound secure their first league point
Deben Division - Sunday 23rd August
With a slightly earlier Sunday morning start, Pettistree Greyhound hosted title chasing Aldeburgh Boules Club in a Deben Division league match. On a deep gravelled area of the car park, the hosts earnt their first league point of the season with a worthy 2-2 draw. This result means that Aldeburgh will probably need to win their remaining two matches to secure the divisional title but with Snape away and Bealings at home, this will be a stiff test.

2009 End Of Season Play-Off Announcement
The official announcement of the venue and associated details for our End Of Season Play-Offs on Sunday 27th September, will be released on this website on 1st September, so please come back and check for some exciting news.
Draw specialists finally break duck
Having drawn 5 of their 7 league matches so far this season, the Royal Oak East Bergholt finally got the elusive first win of the season last weekend with a 3-1 home victory over Rushmere Rugby Rollers, in the Orwell Division of the 2009 Suffolk Coastal Petanque League.
They remain in fourth place with 2 matches left to play whilst Rushmere are sixth with 3 matches to complete before the season 'cut-off' point.
Apparently the after-match nibbles were very good as well.

And They Are Coming Into The Final Furlong!!
With the majority of teams having only 2 or 3 matches left in the 'regular' season, we take a quick look at how things are 'panning out' in each division as we near our Leagues Play-Off Day.
Blyth Division
With the Bell Inn Walberswick (12 points from 7 matches) leading the way by one point over Three Horseshoes North Cove (11 from 8), only the Harbour Inn Southwold (7 from 7) and Laxfield B (8 from 8) have any mathematical chance of catching them and perhaps being in contention for a play-off position. Walberswick & Southwold have 3 matches left whilst the others have two but a lot will depend on who plays who in the final few weeks of the season.
Orwell Division
In this section, there are probably just 3 teams left with a chance of qualifying mathematically. Hollesley Shepherd & Dog (12 points from 8 matches) lead the way but have played 2 matches more than second placed Ipswich PC '09 (10 from 6) whilst Ye Olde Coach & Horses Melton (9 from 7) are just a point behind with 3 matches left. Melton & Ipswich meet next week in a Monday night fixture, so Hollesley will be keeping fingers crossed for a draw between these two I'm sure.
Deben Division
The tightest of all 3 groups with 4 out of the 5 teams still jostling for a play-off spot, with only Pettistree Greyhound out of the running this year. Suivre Les Boules Playford (9 points from 7 matches) lead currently but only have one match left whilst second placed Bealings Exiles (8 from 6) have two still to play. Aldeburgh Boules Club (7 from 5) are tucked in third whilst newboys Golden Key Snape (6 from 6) could feature in the final shake-up.

Sunday August 16th - Forest Heath Charity Pairs
On Sunday August 16th at the world famous Tattersalls yard at Newmarket, Exning PC in association with Forest Heath District Council are hosting their annual Charity Pairs, in aid of the CLIC Sargent charity.
Several of you, like myself, met young Liam at last years event and whilst being young in years, showed great maturity in facing up to what lie ahead of him. Sadly Liam lost his fight earlier this year but meeting him has left an indelible mark on myself and others and will long remain an inspiration.
If you are looking for something to do next Sunday, log onto www.newmarketpetanqueleague.webeden.co.uk/ for further details regarding the competition and entry requirements.

Blyth Division - Wednesday July 22nd
Bell Inn Walberswick 3 Kings Head Laxfield Lovelies 1
The Bell Inn made it five wins unbeaten in the Blyth Division with Wednesday nights home win over the Kings Head ladies team. With 2 more points 'in the bag' they have extended their lead at the top of the table to three points, with most teams in this division still to play 4 matches till the end of the season.
More action happens this Sunday in the Blyth Division, especially as The Bell are on their travels with an away fixture at The 3 Horseshoes North Cove, match scheduled to start at 4pm.

Suivre Les Boules keep rolling along
Dateline: Sunday 19th July 2009
Deben Division of the Suffolk Coastal Petanque League
Earlier today, Suivre Les Boules Playford inflicted a 3-1 defeat upon The Exiles Bealings team, making this the Bealings sides' second defeat of the season and in doing so relinquished the lead in the Deben Division to the Playford side.
The Suivre side have now won 4 out of 5 of their matches so far and currently hold a 2 point advantage over second placed Bealings with Aldeburgh a further point behind but with a match in hand. Suivre might have an opportunity to reinforce their advantage when another home match sees them play Golden Key Snape, but an away victory could see Snape move into second place.

Melton defeat Rushmere..and the rain!
Dateline: Sunday 19th July 2009
Orwell Division of the Suffolk Coastal Petanque League
The half time nibbles, the homemade cheese straws, chutney and scones, washed down with a chilled white wine or beer all made for another successful meeting at the Rollers HQ.
Although the sun made an appearance, the competitors needed to play under umbrellas for the last 10 minutes of the match. With the score laying at 2-1 to the visitors, it was a fine display of wet weather control by Bernie and Oli to seal the match for the Coach & Horses.
The final score being Rushmere Rugby Rollers 1 Ye Olde Coach & Horses Melton 3
(Thanks to Nick Bentley, Rushmere for match report)

Half Term Report....Deben Division
The tightest of all groups, the Deben Division sees teams changing positions on the basis of every result that comes in.
Suivre Les Boules Playford, flushed with the success of their latest 3-1 away win at Pettistree Greyhound, moved level on points (6) with The Exiles Bealings, who were unbeaten until the rapidly improving Golden Key Snape beat them recently.
The Playford team therefore leapfrogged both Aldeburgh Boules Club and the Snape team in the process but its the Aldeburgh team that are the only team so far to have beaten the Suivre team. Aldeburgh themselves suffered their usual 'hoodoo' with the Bealings side beating them by 3-1 in a recent evening fixture.
All eyes will now be cast on the Playford v Bealings match, which is due to be played on Sunday 19th July, with the Aldeburgh & Snape teams hoping for a draw between the two evenly-matched sides.
The Pettistree Greyhound are still looking for their first league points and the next scheduled match they have is away at Bealings in early August.

Half Term Report....Orwell Division
Last years league silver medalists, Hollesley Shepherd & Dog, lead the way in the Orwell Division, with four wins and one draw from their five matches so far, and therefore have accumulated 9 league points to date.
New-boys Ipswich PC '09 have had a good first half of the season, and other than losing 3-1 to Hollesley early in the season, they have won their other four matches all by 4-0 scorelines to be just a single point behind Hollesley. The big match-up will be on 2nd August when these two teams meet for the second time this season and this perhaps will determine the likely divisional champion in this group.
There is a three point gap between 2nd and 3rd places and Ye Olde Coach & Horses currently hold that position, on 5 league points, with new teams Deben Vikings and Royal Oak East Bergholt jostling for position, with 4 league points apiece.
Bring up the rear but soon to be proud owners of the leagues newest piste are the Rushmere Rugby Rollers, who have had minor successes so far without picking up as many league points as they deserve. Currently every opponents favourite venue for the apre-boules refreshments!!

Half Term Report....Blyth Division
With just over half the matches played in this division, there is no clear indication yet as to whom might be in pole position come the end of the season. Currently 4 teams are divided by just three points at the top with the other two a further two points behind.
The Bell Inn Walberswick sit at the summit with a 4 wins from 4 record although they have more away matches to play than home matches left, so whether home advantage is playing its part is yet to be seen.
Just one point behind, but having played 2 matches more are the 3 Horseshoes North Cove, who jumped up from 4th to 2nd with their recent 4-0 away success against the Laxfield Lovelies last Sunday.
Third and fourth place are between Laxfield B (6 points) and Harbour Inn Southwold (5 points) and either of them could still have a greater second half of the season and move into the reckoning by mid-September. Further back are the Laxfield Lovelies and Laxfield A team locked on equal points and only seperated by 16 shots difference.

Royal Oak await first win but still gain league points
League newcomers Royal Oak East Bergholt have now gone 6 Orwell Division matches without being on the winning side but Tuesday nights result was probably as good as a win.
Visiting team Hollesley Shepherd & Dog (last years Silver Medalists and this seasons Orwell league leaders) paid a visit to the Royal Oak, with a record of played 4, won 4, in a match that was re-arranged from a previously postponed date.
Obviously home advantage is a major factor, as whilst Hollesley have never lost at home in 2 years, the Oak have yet to lose themselves at home this season and put a dent in Hollesleys championship march with a very very respectable 2-2 draw.
This was the Oaks fourth draw of the year and sees them just off the foot of the table with some results yet to be received.

Golden Key Snape find the right combination to defeat Bealings
With the unbeaten Exiles Bealings team due to visit, the Golden Key Snape must surely of hoped for a better result than the 4-0 loss they suffered right back at the start of this years league fixtures.
With the Deben Division shaping up to be the most likely to be the tightest of all three divisions in the Suffolk Coastal Petanque League this year, the Golden Key have already come along way since the start of the 2009 season and have seen results steadily improve.
The Snape team have the leagues largest 'squad' with around 16 potential players to call upon, and certainly the 7 who were on duty last Sunday did themselves and their team proud with a big 3-1 win and thus spoiling the Exiles' unbeaten record.
This result brings the Key right into the melting pot as far as the end of season play-offs are concerned and with another 'big' encounter at the end of the month versus Suivre Les Boules Playford, anything can happen in this group.

Happy 'chimes' for Walberswick Bell
In a top-of-the table clash on Sunday, local rivals but good friends, the Bell Inn Walberswick entertained the Harbour Inn Southwold, in their Blyth Division match-up.
Both sides were occupying the top two spots in the division, with The Bell holding a 100% record so far this year and had already won 3-1 at Southwold earlier in the season.
Despite only just less than half of the league programme left, a significant result was obtained by Walberswick with another 3-1 triumph, putting them 3 points clear in pole position and with matches in hand over their nearest opponents in the table.

Lovely win for the Lovelies
Winning local derbies are one of the best moments in sports and the Kings Head Laxfield Lovelies enjoyed sweet success over their 'stablemates' Laxfield A, last Wednesday evening (24th June) with a 3-1 victory.
This was the Lovelies first league win and will start to push them up from the foot of the table and with half the league fixtures still to go, they have plenty of time to push further up the table, especially as the league positions are so tight in the Blyth Division.

Away Day Success For Aldeburgh
The re-arranged Deben Division match between Suivre Les Boules Playford and Aldeburgh Boules Club (originally scheduled for Sunday May 24th), was played out earlier today in glorious sunshine and resulted in a 3-1 away win for the 'beachcombers'.
This win keeps them level with The Exiles Bealings at the top of the division, with only 3 shots seperating these two teams.

Reached Our Century!!
By having detailed scorecards sent in on time (normally!), I'm pleased to report that even at this early stage of the season, we've already had over 100 people play in our Coastal League in the 2009 season.
Several teams are getting between 6 and 8 players play for them regularly, so lets hope that continues right through to the end of the season when we hope to welcome more teams in readiness for the 2010 season!

Pick Of The Recent Scores
Whilst its too early to say who are going to be the main contenders in each division, (as everyone seems capable of beating each other), it was nice to see one of our newer teams get their first league win when the Rushmere Rugby Rollers achieved a 3-1 home win against the Royal Oak East Bergholt, in the Orwell Division.
Well done to 'The Rollers' but also fingers crossed for the Oak to savour a victory soon.

Re-Arranged Matches
Now that we seem to be coming into the slightly better weather, I am aware that a few previously postponed matches have yet to be re-arranged (or if they have I haven't been notified!) and am suggesting that these get played sooner rather than later, as we don't want a bottleneck of matches at the end of the season.
General Comment
May I remind teams that I need to have received match scorecards reasonably soon after the completion of a match or at least an e-mail letting me know if a match has been cancelled and/or re-arranged.
Also scorecards please need to have name & surnames on, not just first or nicknames.
Thank you.

Scorecards......Final Reminder
1. Home Team provides scorecard (we would recommend visiting team brings a spare just in case)
2. Its filled in with full names, not just first names and signed by both captains upon completion of the match.
3. Winning Team posts scorecard to League Co-Ordinator - unless it is a 2-2 draw
4. In the event of a 2-2 draw, the HOME team posts the scorecard to the League Co-Ordinator
5. Late scorecards may incur penalties........you've be warned!!!

Arranging Matches....Reminder As Well
When arranging matches, it is normally the 'rule of thumb' that the home team contacts their forthcoming opponents with a suggested time and venue details.
However, there are some more 'forward' teams than others who will usually make contact first in any case.
We don't mind how or when you re-arrange times/dates etc but ask that you keep the League Co-Ordinator advised.

Start Times.....A Reminder To All
Can we remind ALL teams that although 10.30am Sunday is a prefered start time, it is up to ALL captains to arrange with their respective opponents an agreeable start time if 10.30 doesn't suit.
We ask that ALL teams respect the fact that other teams, may on occassions, have the need to play matches at different times and ask that you ALL remain as flexible as possible..........there is enough days in the year to get the match fitted in somewhere in the calendar!!!

2009 Play-Off Format
Due to the fact that we have three divisions this year, the Play-Off format will be slightly different as follows;
The Grand Final will consist of the best two group winners (based upon their average points per match ratio).
The 3rd/4th Place Play-Off will involve the remaining group winner PLUS the best runner-up from the 3 groups (again based on the average points per match ratio).
The venue for the Play-Offs have yet to be determined but further details will follow during the course of the season.

Leagues Latest Piste
Thanks to funding received from both Suffolk Coastal District Council and Suffolk County Council, we now have a 2-lane piste constructed at Kingston Playing Field in Woodbridge. Built by the same contractor as the existing piste at Bealings, the new piste will have a new team playing on it in time for our forthcoming 2009 season.
It is available for use by anybody and there are both refreshment and toilet facilities located at the pavillion to the left hand side of the playing field.
