2011 Suffolk Coastal Petanque League - Registration Deadline

Please note the following deadline for registration into the 2011 Suffolk Coastal Petanque League....

Friday 11th February 2011 - Latest Day for Registrations to be received by League Co-Ordinator (if you need registration paperwork, please contact us asap)

(Registration Venue(s) still to be decided - details to follow soon)

This date is to allow the formulation and e-mailed circulation of the 2011 fixtures to all teams by Sunday 13th February 2011)

""This then gives ALL teams 3 weeks notice for their first match of the season, currently scheduled as Sunday 6th March 2011**

Sunday 5 December 2010

Revised Date for the Ipswich North Sea Trophy

Whilst previously advertised as being staged on Sunday 10th July 2011, the proposed Ipswich North Sea Trophy against our visiting friends from Belgium, will now have to be held on Saturday 9th July instead, due to tidal influences as all the Belgium team are arriving by yachts and will be moored in and around Ipswich Haven Marina over that particular weekend.

Team Name Change

As from 1st January 2011, the existing Woodbridge Town Petanque Club will change their team name to ''Woodbridge Saxons'', as well as changing their team captain from Roy (who done a sterling job) to Roger (who has playing experience in Spain).

Furthermore whilst Sara has transfered to the Christchurch Park Boules Club, the Saxons have recruited a new member in Anne, thus keeping their numbers to 8.

Wednesday 24 November 2010

We've Reached 36

Yes, there will be at least 6 divisions in the 2011 season, with todays arrival of the ''Early Bird'' Registration Fees from;

Kings Head Laxfield A
Kings Head Laxfield B
Kings Head Laxfield Lovelies (all-ladies team)
Bramford Cock'N'Boules

We are now at the same registration level as we had for the 2010 season and still have 5 existing teams to possibly re-register, along with 2 or 3 more new teams (that I know of!!), that could potentially register.

Sunday 21 November 2010

Something Old, Something New

One of the 'Original Nine' founding members of the Coastal League, Mill Inn Aldeburgh, are pleased to announce that they are back in for the 2011 season.

Also due to a highly successful 'Boules In The Park' event in July and the on-going promotional work, enough players have been found (press-ganged!!) into forming the Christchurch Park Boules Club and entering two teams for the new season.

Latest 2011 Team Membership Count: 32 (all paid up in advance)

Saturday 20 November 2010

Coming In Three's

After receiving Tattingstones 3 teams registrations earlier in the week, Friday and Saturday mornings post saw another 3 teams enter via the Early Bird Registration Scheme.

Welcome to:

Deben Vikings
BT Antares Allstars
Parrot & Punchbowl Aldringham

Thursday 18 November 2010

Its Triplets!!!

The three teams from the Tattingstone Wheatsheaf have all renewed their League Membership with the receipt of their 'Early Bird' Registration Forms for the 2011 season.

This means our numbered of registered teams for next season currently stands at 27.

Wednesday 17 November 2010

Welcome to the ''Hares''

After a recent successful demonstration event, held on the Millenium Green, we have now received the registration fee from a new team based in Huntingfield. (For the less geographically-minded amongst you, Huntingfield is basically to the left of Halesworth and creates a local triangle with Laxfield and Cratfield).

Using their Parish Councils' piste behind the village hall, the Huntingfield Hares plan to utilise the Huntingfield Arms, as their post-match watering hole.

The League would like to extend a warm welcome to Huntingfield.

Sunday 14 November 2010

New Divisional names for 2011 season

As we are expecting our numbers for the 2011 season to be around 40 to 48 teams, this will have the potential of seeing up to 8 Divisional groups.

Therefore as we've run out of rivers, we are now working through famous Suffolk persons and announce that the two new groups will be named Wolsey Division and Constable Division respectively.

Due to historical locations, one of the new divisions with 'South of Ipswich' teams will be the Constable, and the new division including mainly Ipswich based teams would effectively be the Wolsey Division, all subject to final group placements in early February 2011.

Saturday 13 November 2010

Founding Member team signs up for fourth season

One of our original 9 teams from our inaugral 2008 season, The Hollesley Shepherd & Dog, have sent in their Early Bird registration for the 2011 season.

Whilst having a few problems with team numbers last year, Nick & his team have re-entered and have made one or two new 'signings'.

Thursday 11 November 2010

Welcome to The Eels Foot Inn

Becoming the twenty-second team to register for the 2011 season, we welcome The Eels Foot Inn at Eastbridge, having received their Early Bird registration earlier today.

Saturday 6 November 2010

''International Tournament'' Sunday 10th July 2011

As an league, we have been approached by a Belgian/French organisation who are planning to be in Ipswich during the weekend of 8th till 10th July 2011 and would like to incorporate into their itinerary a petanque tournament against local players.

We have started initial talks with them regarding the format of the competition and they are happy for us to put up some local opposition against their members, making it an ''international event''. The event itself would be held somewhere around the Ipswich Waterfront.

As we are sure many of you would like to play in this event, we are going to make it an ''invite only'' tournament and therefore give our league ''first-option'' on places. However historically there are a few non-Suffolk Coastal League people that we would also like to invite.

To pre-warn everybody, as there will be costs associated with organising and hosting this event, there will be a 'contribution fee' to be paid by our teams and we would ask you to budget for approximately £15 to £20 per team.

The format has yet to be decided but we are suggesting to our European visitors that doubles would suit us better as thats what we play currently in our Coastal League.

We will need to put together a list of interested persons, so if you would like to be included on the ''mailing list'' for this event, please e-mail the League Co-Ordinator. (Requesting to be on the mailing list does not constitute an invite at this stage).

Friday 5 November 2010

21 Today

Latest 2011 League entry received from..........The Kings Head Stutton.......playing under the team name of ''The Monarchs Bonce''. (They are also considering a possible second team as well).

Welcome aboard.

Friday 29 October 2010

And Then There Was 20

Received in this weeks post was 2010 Silver Medalists, Suivre les Boules Playford's Early Bird registration form for the 2011 season.

Also received was The Dicky 1 (formerly The Royal Oak East Bergholt) and The Dicky 2 (formerly The Dicky East Bergholt)

We now have 20 teams already registered for next year, meaning that there will be at the very least, a minimum of 4 divisions.

Remember 'Early Bird' Registration is still available till 30th November 2010 at just £10 per team for the entire season.

Friday 15 October 2010

Plenty of Notice........No Arguments

Having not sat down since the 2010 Grand Finals, and that the 2011 season won't organise itself, I've been attempting to work out how next seasons calendar will work out.

Due to the fact that we should end up with even more teams than the 2010 season, it will be likely that we see 16 teams qualify for play-offs, having a Last 16 Round reducing the number to 8 teams and then a Last 8 Round reducing the number down to 4 teams for the Grand Finals itself.

As these play-offs are likely to need the bulk of September to get played, we would be looking at having the Grand Finals on Sunday 2nd October 2011. This will also mean that we need to get started a few weeks earlier and therefore if we aim to have the season start on Sunday 6th March 2011, teams will have 27 weeks to get their group fixtures completed (this being 3 weeks more than the 2010 season and will hopefully(?) prevent 'cramming' of matches into the last few weeks).

So there you have it, 20 weeks notice till the Leagues starting weekend on Sunday 6th March 2011.............more than enough time for you all to get sorted!!

Four More Join 2011 League

Post in my household the last few days has been hectic to say the least, and we can now add the following to the growing list of teams already 'paid up' for the 2011 season.

Christchurch Park Boules Club, Ipswich
Three Horseshoes North Cove
Beaux Belles Middleton
Woodbridge Town PC

This puts our numbers to 17 teams so far. Remember the 'Early Bird Registration Scheme' has been extended until 30th November 2010.

Thursday 14 October 2010

Christchurch Park Boules Club officially formed

Having received more individual players membership fees today, the Christchurch Park Boules Club, based in Ipswich, was officially born.

We now have 7 paid-up players thereby exceeding the minimum number of players required to form a team and they will look forward to next seasons fixtures against teams in and around the Ipswich 'zone'.

There are still 9 places available within the club, because if we can get a total of 16, then this new club will be in a position to enter two teams instead.

Sunday 10 October 2010

Discounted Registration Fee period extended

Due to the success of the ''Early Bird'' Registration Scheme and that many teams were not able to get to the Grand Finals two weeks ago, it has been decided to extend the discounted registration fee period until the end of November.

Therefore any team (existing or new) has the opportunity to register for our 2011 season by the 30th November, for the sum of just £10 per team.

Please contact us for a registration form asap.

Ipswich PC '09 'stump' Henley Cricketers in five game thriller

2010 Quarter Final Play-Off
Sunday 12th September @ Henley Indoor Cricket Stadium

As it was both sides home piste, it was probably inevitable that Ipswich PC '09 and Henley Cricketers would select here as their play-off venue, as neither side had lost at home this season. This record was going to be broken one way or another...

Henley had the better of the opening games, going into a 2-0 lead with wins of 13-4 and 13-8 respectively. Uphill task for 2009 Coastal champions, Ipswich, if they were going to pull matters around.

And thats exactly what they did with 13-1 and 13-9 victories putting the match all square at 2-2 and therefore needing the 'sudden death' fifth game decider, with their entire season now hinging on one game.

In what was a right old tussle, Ipswich finally pulled through by 13-7 and become the first 2010 Grand Finalists

Friday 10 September 2010

The Announcement Of The Season

Sunday September 26th is Grand Final Play-Offs Day to be held at.....

The White Hart, Blythburgh

We would require Grand Finalist teams to arrive by 11.30am, ready to commence semi-finals by 11.45am.

Dependent upon how these matches go time wise, the 3rd/4th Place Play-Off and the Grand Final itself could start at 1.30pm at the earliest.

This would then mean that the End of Season Presentations will be held around 3.45pm - 4.15pm, with us being completely finished around 5pm, subject to anyone else fancying playing on the piste following the main attractions.

Please bring your own seating as the picnic table seating is located a little away from the playing area itself.

HOWEVER, THERE WILL BE ABSOLUTELY NO PARKING AT THE PUB ITSELF FOR PETANQUE PERSONS. INSTEAD WE ARE REQUIRED TO PARK DIRECTLY OPPOSITE THE PUB AT THE VILLAGE HALL.

Despite this season supposedly being the turn of the 'Southern' area to host the event, we did not manage to find a suitably large enough venue to cater for all of the criteria we require. Therefore The White Hart was selected, also in an effort to show Blythburgh what our league is about and hopefully generate interest there enough for them to put together a team for the new season.

Monday 30 August 2010

2010 Grand Finals Day venue to be announced

With baited breath, everyone is awaiting the news on the venue for this years 2010 Grand Finals Play-Offs, due to be held on Sunday 26th September

We can now reveal that the venue will be announced on the 31st August and the only place to find out this information first-hand will be this site.

First point of the season

A tremondous effort away at unbeaten Orwell Division leaders, Suivre Les Boules Playford, saw the Turks Head Hasketon finally gain their first league point of the season with a 2-2 draw.

This was the Turks Heads' ninth match of the season and, to be fair, was probably not the scoreline most people would have expected, but once again the formbook was turned on its head and the Turks Head fully deserve the praise for becoming our final team to earn a league point in the 2010 season.

This result also means that Suivre Les Boules Playford now have a last-day winner-takes-all match at Henley Cricketers, with the victor winning the Orwell Divisional title.

'BellWatch' continued....

The Bell Inn Walberswick, only a few weeks ago, were way behind schedule for a variety of reasons, but nonetheless made a commitment to the league to get their matches completed by the September 5th deadline.

On Wednesday 25th August, they entertained Wenhaston Star Two and gained a 3-1 home victory, thereby completing all their 5 home matches, all being 3-1 scorelines. This latest win has seen them move to the top of the Blyth Division, by just one point ahead of Hoxne Swan PC.

The Bell just have Cretingham Belles away and on the cut-off day, the potential divisional 'decider' away at Hoxne themselves.

Unbeaten teams suffer over last two weeks

The current seedings have been completely turned upside down with results in recent weeks with previously unbeaten teams on the end of losing scorelines.

Firstly we had The Dicky East Bergholt losing away at Tattingstone Wheatsheaf against the Chaffs. Friday August 20th saw Hoxne Swan PC lose 3-1 away at The Bell Inn Walberswick, who had themselves lost last week away at Sunset Boulevards (Diss) by the same scoreline.

Then we had the Mill Inn Aldeburgh losing by 4-0 in Saturday mornings match away at The Golden Key Snape.

Now on Sunday we have the Royal Oak losing their in-house derby by 4-0 to The Dicky.

So five sides that hadn't lost up to two weeks ago, now have a '1' in the loss column, leaving only 3 teams out of 36 who are still unbeaten.....but then again we still have two more weeks to go!!!!!!

Bell Watch - Part Two

The Bell Inn, Walberswick are catching up fast...

Having a 3-1 victory over Wenhaston Star, they then had a 3-1 loss at Sunset Boulevards (Diss), but then in the return fixture this week, reversed that scoreline and beat the Diss team 3-1 and moved to within one point of Diss in the league table, with two matches in hand.

Last night (Friday 20th August) should have seen them at home to Hoxne Swan PC then on Sunday 22nd, at home to Wenhaston Star One.

Monday 16 August 2010

Unbeaten Dicky slip at Wheatsheaf Tattingstone

Previously unbeaten The Dicky from East Bergholt (6 wins and 1 draw) made the short journey over to Tattingstone Wheatsheaf to take on the Chaffs. The Wheatsheaf Chaffs had already got a victory in the week with a Thursday night victory over their Wheatsheaf colleagues, The Stooks, and have been moving up the table recently.

The Dicky meanwhile had not lost during the season and were currently sitting as Seed 2 in the current rankings table but a 3-1 triumph for the Chaffs sees the Dicky drop to Seed 5 whilst slightly improving the chances The Chaffs could even possibly sneak runners-up spot in the Stour Division....although the Royal Oak could have a lot to say about that.

Thanks to two successive 4-0 home victories, firstly over BT Antares Allstars and then on Sunday versus The Exiles Bealings, the Ipswich PC'09 team have secured the 2010 Gipping Division title and with it one of the highly prized quarter-final play-off berths.

It is yet to be known as to whom they may play in these play-offs but by virtue of being divisional winners they will not be any lower than 6th Seed in the knock-out stages.

Boules In The Park 2010 - A Great Success

Sunday July 25th
Christchurch Park, Ipswich

Thanks to the volunteer team, this years Boules In The Park, was a great day. Free to enter, we had 51 new people try the event and 38 persons had more than one 1 hour session, so in total we really had 89 sessions from 10.15am till 4.15pm.

The League was represented by players from Mill Inn Aldeburgh, Henley Cricketers, Deben Vikings, Sunset Boulevards (Diss), Brantham Bull, Woodbridge Town PC & Pettistree Greyhound.

The interest generated has meant that it will be likely that Christchurch Park has its own team for the 2011 season and we have already approached the Council to see if we can make the playing area a permanent piste location.

Boules In The Park 2010

Earlier this week we had a very good meeting with Team Ipswich & Ipswich Borough Councils Parks Dept, regarding our proposed 'Boules In The Park' event, scheduled for Sunday July 25th.

Having obtained two Funded Grants to stage this event in Ipswich, we outlined both the general principle and several of the more finer details regarding the associated details such as toilet facilities, refreshments, access, insurance etc etc.

With that in mind, we have modified our plan slightly with a much more suitable venue being suggested by us that seems to 'tick' far more of the councils boxes with respect to certain criteria.

Now is the time we really need you to step forward and help us out. We are looking for volunteers (holding a current CRB certificate or similar Safeguarding document). Anybody with First Aid training would be also duly welcomed.

Personally I can't do this all on my own and it's time for you all to give something back to the league. Remember it could lead to more teams and more permanent facilities being established within our local area.

Thorpeness Dolphin 'net' league point at Snape

In the Deben Division of this seasons Coastal League, the Dolphin Inn from Thorpeness made the relatively short journey down the Suffolk coastline, for their encounter with the Golden Key Snape.

Thorpeness had yet to win a single game in their two matches to date but put in great effort and battled to a high-creditable 2-2 draw, against a Snape side who themselves are chasing for the Divisional title this season, trying to keep pace with Mill Inn Aldeburgh.

Double 'raid' by Vikings

Deben Vikings completed a busy weekend for them in the Orwell Division of the Suffolk Coastal Petanque League with a 4-0 Sunday home win over The Turks Head Hasketon, where they came face to face with a former Viking player from last season but secured a full 4 league points in two days.

This was because on Saturday afternoon they had also achieved the same 4-0 scoreline, this time at home to Martlesham Womens Institute.

These results have moved them currently to third in the Orwell group but with still over half the season still to go.

Bramford snatch draw at Hollesley

Despite being 2-0 down at half-time in their Gipping Division match away at Hollesley Shepherd & Dog, the Bramford Cock'N'Boules team managed to earn a draw by winning the remaining two games and become only the third 2-2 draw of the entire Coastal League season.

This result still saw Hollesley at the top of the 6-team division, with Bramford one point behind them but having played one match more.

Walberswick & Cretingham in 'ding-dong' battle

In the first 'Battle of the Bells', it was hosts Bell Inn Walberswick who came out on top by recording a 3-1 home triumph over the all-female Cretingham Belles last week.

Last years silver medalists Walberswick fielded a full 8-person squad and the one game lost was by a score of 13-12. The Belles themselves were not completely overwhelmed as two of the games were 9-13 losses and they were only just outscored by 35-51.

Friday 7 May 2010

Defending champions make good start

Last years Coastal League champions, Ipswich PC '09, finally got to play their opening league match on Thursday 6th May, when they welcomed Bramford Cock'N'Boule to the Henley Stadium.

Taking advantage of the lighter evenings, both opening pairs won their matches 13-2. The third game went 13-5 in favour of Ipswich as well, and even though Bramford led 11-2 in the final game, Ipswich clawed their way back to eventually sneak the game 13-12 and secure a 4-0 result.

Friday 30 April 2010

BT make league debut but lose at home to Bramford

BT Antares Allstars put up a brave fight against Bramford Cock'N'Boules, in their first Coastal League match of the season, but ended up on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline. Two games went to 13-12, one to either side, and the individual points stacked up as 51-41 in favour of the visiting Bramford side.

Monday 26 April 2010

Finally a 2-2 draw!!!!!

It happened much later than we'd thought but we've had our seasons first 2-2 result between Pettistree Greyhound and Mill Inn Aldeburgh in the Deben Division.

Now means I've got to put an extra column on the league tables in the weekly Results Bulletin!!!!

The Chaffs are not chuffed following second loss whilst Brantham remain bullish

Making both their second appearances of the season, The Tattingstone Wheatsheaf 'Chaff From The Wheatie' played hosts to neighbours Brantham Bull in the Stour Division of the 2010 season.

Both sides had lost their opening matches of the season and it was the visitors from the Bull who came away with the two league points following a 3-1 win. The match itself saw 93 points scored (out of a maximum 100) with the Bull outscoring their hosts by 49-44.

No Drawn Matches As Yet...Who Is Going To Be The First?

Thirteen matches completed so far and not a single 2-2 draw as yet...perhaps things will be different as most teams go into their second matches this weekend or next.

With so many new teams due to play other new teams I'm sure the 2-2 duck will be broken soon.

Sunset Boulevards 'dazzle' in away victory

The Sunset Boulevards from Diss made their Coastal League debut last Sunday away at fellow debutants, The Star Inn Wenhaston, against the Stars No.2 team and recorded a great 4-0 away triumph.

Due to the Easter Sunday match scheduling, this is so far the only match played in the entire Northern Section, which spans both this Blyth Division but also its 'sister' division, the Waveney.

Reason To Celebrate...Part 2

Once again the 'corks are a'popping' in the Coastal League today as official notification was received that we were successful in securing a further grant towards our proposed Summer 2010 project.

The London 2012 Open Weekend In Suffolk has granted our application towards the major portion of the events costs and we are indeed thankful to them for seeing us as a suitable recipient.

Details of our proposed project will be released during next weeks Registration Events.

New Logo for the Coastal Alliance

Other than jigging around with colour, fonts etc on the website to keep the appearance looking fresh, we've managed to get a professional logo design created and this will now appear emblazoned on just about every bit of official paperwork you see regarding the Coastal League.

Hope you like it and feel that it represents the Coastal theme and will be a good test of who actually notices!!

Items for sale at Registration Nights

Our usual Registration Night sale of petanque accessories will happen again at our evenings of the 25th & 26th February. So make sure you bring your pennies.

Firstly we have cochs at a 'credit-busting' 50p each (you will normally pay around twice as much elsewhere). We have a limited supply so please try to pre-order with us before the events to save disappointment.

Secondly we have acquired some Rule Books which will be made available for a contribution of £2 to those that want them. Again please try to pre-order to get your copy.

League secures boules deal with local supplier

The Suffolk Coastal Petanque League in partnership with Fox's Chandlery and Outdoor have agreed a special 'League Only' price for boules.

For the special price of £14.50 per set of 8 boules (this includes VAT), you can collect from their Chandlery outlet located at Wherstead. Teams registering for the 2010 season will be provided with a League Membership card at their respective Registration Nights and you would need to present this card at Fox's when paying for your boules, to take advantage of this offer.

Thank you to Simon & Nigel at Fox's for setting this up and helping keep our league local by being our local boules supplier.

Fox's Chandlery & Outdoor can be found at The Strand, Wherstead, Ipswich, IP2 8NJ

Divisional names prepared for new season

It made sense when we started the League to name the divisions after local rivers that were near to where the core of that division teams were based. In 2008 we had the Blyth and the Deben Division, then in 2009 with expansion occuring, we added the Orwell Division.

For 2010, although we cannot guarantee exact number of entries, we are expecting to need three more divisions to satisfy the growing interest.

Be ready to see the appearance of the following;
Waveney Division
Gipping Division
Stour Division

Any better suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Woodbridge Town Petanque Club born

Although we await the membership fees from two remaining persons, the newly formed Woodbridge Town Petanque Club has 6 confirmed and fully paid up players all raring to go for the new 2010 season.

The team will be using the Suffolk Coastal & County Council funded piste at Kingston Park, near Woodbridge and will be getting together during February and March for some pre-season coaching and playing.

Team members consist of persons reading local newspaper articles in and around the Woodbridge area and being 'moulded' into a new team, similar to how the Deben Vikings team were formed last season.

Coastal Alliance receives Sports Grant

Following a successful application process, the Suffolk Coastal Petanque Alliance have secured Sports Grant Funding for a special 2010 event from Team Ipswich & Free Rein.

Mr Simon Fletcher, Mr Lewis Fletcher & Mr Andy Wilson attended the formal presentations last Thursday evening in the Ipswich Town Hall Council Chambers, where details of the grant application were read out and along with the other 10 sucessful applicants, the grant cheque was handed over.

Details of the event will be made available upon the Leagues Registration Nights but the League will be looking for volunteers to help at the one day event, namely persons with CRB certification and/or persons with First Aid training would be sought after.
