Another Award for the League

Last night we picked up a Certificate of Commendation as runners-up in the Coastal Sports Alliance category at the Suffolk Coastal Sports Awards, held at BT Adastral Park, Martlesham.

Originally nominated with 9 others, we made the final 4 on the short-list and were invited onto the stage to await the announcement of the winner. Unfortunately it wasn't our night (always the bridesmaid, never the bride!!), but yet another feather in the cap of the league, with its 3rd major sports award in the last 2 seasons.

Belgium Trip 2012

We are still planning our trip to Belgium between the dates of Friday 4th until Monday 7th May 2012 and are close to securing both the coach travel and hotel rooms.

However we still have places available for the trip at a cost of £235 per person, which includes your hotel costs, coach & Eurotunnel costs, and you are invited to be part of this trip by getting in touch with us as soon as possible.

We are due to play 2 matches against local Belgian clubs with the chance of Saturday morning sailing, a BBQ on Saturday evening, and a spot of sight-seeing thrown in and possibly a hypermarket stop on the way back to home shores.

Nomination for 2011 Suffolk Coastal Sports Awards

Following hot on the heels of our recent success at the 2011 Suffolk Sports Awards, we have now received our notification that we have been nominated and subsequently short-listed for a similar category in the 2011 Suffolk Coastal Sports Awards, due to be held at BT Adastral Park, Martlesham, on Sunday 20th November.

To be short-listed once again is a major achievement especially as this now our second award short-listing in the season. Fingers crossed for a positive outcome but even if we aren't winners, it will again showcase the League to many others who aren't aware of our League or indeed our sport generally.

2012 ''Early Bird'' Registration - Discounted Period ended

We have received 34 entries for the 2012 season via our ''Early Bird'' Registration Scheme, but this ended on Monday 31st October, with the Registration Fee rising to £15 per team thereafter.

If you require Registration Forms, then please contact the League Co-Ordinator.

Success at the Suffolk Sports Awards 2011

At the recent Gala Presentation evening, held at Trinity Park, Ipswich, we picked up the runners-up spot in the BBC Radio Suffolk sponsored category in the 2011 Suffolk Sports Awards.

This is a major achievement for the league in only its 4th season of existence and made the ''bigger sports'' sit up and take notice of us, as we were probably the most minority sport represented at the event (with the exception of perhaps wheelchair basketball).

The League Co-Ordinator was interviewed by BBC Radio Suffolk directly after the presentation ceremony and this interview was aired by BBC Radio Suffolk in various programmes during the course of last week.

No Sooner Has The Dust Settled.....

Yes, whilst we were completing the 2011 Grand Finals at Blyford a short while back, it also signalled the start of the Registration process for the 2012 season.

Using the ''Early Bird'' Scheme like we did for the 2011 season, we have already (as at 12th October) got 17 teams registered. Four of these entrants are new teams and their names/locations will be revealed in due course.

In the meantime, please be aware that the Early Bird Scheme will currently end on the 31st October, with registration being £12 per team, before rising to £15 per team from 1st November onwards (subject to further review).

Suffolk Sports Awards 2011

We are attending the 2011 Suffolk Sports Awards this year, on Sunday 16th October, as being one of three shortlisted for an award in one of the 16 or so categories at this years Awards Ceremony, due to be held at Trinity Park, Ipswich.

Thank you for your nominations and keep your fingers crossed for us.

2010 Grand Finalists both eliminated...on same day!!

2010 & 2009 Coastal League Champions, Ipswich PC '09 and 2010 Grand Finalists, Suivre Les Boules Playford, both were knocked-out earlier today in their respective Last 16 play-off matches.

Ipswich PC '09 lost 3-1 at the Framsden Dobermann to Meadlands Stowmarket, whilst 15th Seeded Cretingham Bell upset the seedings by beating no.2 Seed, Suivre Les Boules Playford, by a similar 3-1 scoreline at Christchurch Park, Ipswich.

Sunday August 21st - FINAL DAY OF THE LEAGUE

Yes, it has come round quickly but this Sunday is the final day that teams have to get their league matches played by.

As every result can affect the final Last 16 seedings, we will require you to text your match scores on Sunday to the League Co-Ordinator (on the number provided in this weeks Results Bulletin), as the 16 Seeded teams need to be notified by the evening of the 21st as to whom their play-off opponents are.

There is no scope for teams to play outstanding matches after the 21st due to the limited time we have in getting the knock-out stages played.

As stated in previous Results Bulletins, teams failing to complete all their scheduled league matches may have their final seedings adjusted accordingly.

Ipswich North Sea Trophy 2011 - Results

Last Saturday we welcomed KYCN Nieuwpoort of Belgium to Ipswich Marina Waterfront and competed in an international challenge match between their club and our own Suffolk Coastal Petanque League.

In great weather, the League ran out winners by 20 games to 3 (with 1 drawn game, as matches were played to a time limit). There were 3 unbeaten English pairs on the day, out of a team of 20 pairs, playing against 6 Belgian pairs.

Gold and silver medals were presented to all competitors and the evening concluded with our visitors extending an invite for us to make the return journey to Belgium in 2012.

We wish to thank our Community Event Grant Funders, University Campus Suffolk, Ipswich Haven Marina for their support and help in getting the event sorted and to all our Event Partners (who provided appropriate sponsorship).

Ipswich North Sea Trophy 2011 - CLOSE OF REGISTRATION

Due to printing deadlines for the tournament programme etc, we need to close the registration for the Ipswich North Sea Trophy, which is due to be played on Saturday 9th July.

The registration period will end at midnight of Saturday 18th June.

We currently have the capacity to accomodate 7 more pairs at the event but these places need to be secured by submitting your form and fees to us asap.

For more details e-mail us at imogenlewiskira@sky.com

Last Day to Complete Your League Matches

As its exactly 10 weeks to go until the end of the 'regular' league season, this is your first official reminder that all scheduled league matches must be completed and results notified to the League Co-Ordinator by midnight of Sunday 21st August 2011.

This means that if you're in a 5-team division, you will have completed 8 matches or similarly if you're in a 6-team division, you will have played 10 matches on or before August 21st.

Any match that remains unplayed by this cut-off date will be deemed as void. Each unplayed match will be judged by the League Co-Ordinator as to whether teams have made sufficient efforts in getting the match arranged. (This is where copying your e-mails in to the League Co-Ordinator becomes significant and/or even generally responding to a general League e-mail itself).

Hopefully everyone will be complete by the cut-off date, thus saving us a paper trail!!

Ipswich North Sea Trophy - REGISTRATION UPDATE

As most of you know, we have our International Petanque tournament set up for Saturday 9th July when our friends from Belgum invade Ipswich and we take them on at the Ipswich Waterfront.

There is the need to carry out a proper registration period and we set out below the timetable as follows;

Registration Details sent to those who expressed an initial interest when we originally asked: Saturday 30th April
YOU THEREFORE HAVE ONE WEEK ''HEAD-START'' ON REGISTERING
Registration Details sent to others who we wish to invite/need to invite:
Saturday 7th May

THERE IS THEN ONE MORE WEEK'S ''HEAD-START''
Registration Details sent out to our general petanque contacts:
Saturday 14th May

SIX WEEK REGISTRATION PERIOD
Closing of Registration: Saturday 25th June 2011 (this is due to printing deadlines for the events official programme)
Date of Event: Saturday 9th July 2011

The event itself is a pairs competition and the cost is £15 per pair. The entry fee MUST be sent with the official entry form, cheques made payable to ''Suffolk Coastal Petanque Alliance'' and returned to the League Co-Ordinator at the address given on the official entry form.

Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis on the basis of the League Co-Ordinator receiving your entry fees at the address stated. If the event is over-subscribed, preference will be given to teams who enter one pair rather than teams who make multiple entries. This is to make sure our League is represented fairly.
However there will only be around 20 'pairs' places available for the English side in the tournament.

Goodbye Ye Olde Coach & Horses...Hello La Tete du Turc

The eagle-eyed amongst you will notice from this weeks league results, a new name appears in the Gipping Division.

Ye Olde Coach & Horses at Melton has been boarded up, we don't quite know the reason why but it has left the Melton team without a home venue. However some quick negotiation by the Melton players has seen them quickly relocate to the Turks Head @ Hasketon and re-name themselves La Tete du Turc.

Thanks to Brent, Nigel et al at the Turks Head for allowing this to happen and thanks also to Mike from Melton for getting it sorted out quickly and efficiently.

More Details of the Ipswich North Sea Trophy to be released soon

Plans are progressing well for our International Petanque Event due to be held on Ipswich Waterfront on Saturday 9th July.

Grant Funding has been secured from the UCS Community Event Grant Scheme and we are now discussing event sponsorship/partnering, as well as working out a suitable entry fee for those of you who are interested in playing against our Belgian visitors.

They now plan to bring 15 pairs, but we will look to probably provide around 20 - 25 pairs ourselves, so there is space for the vast majority of you who have expressed a wish to play.

If you aren't already down to be e-mailed specifically for this event, then please let me know of your interest asap. We are not taking registrations yet, so repeatedly e-mailing me to say you want to register now isn't necessary.

However on a given date I will e-mail all the interested persons the registration details and it will quite literally be the first to get their entry fees to me will be allocated places on a first paid, first served basis.

On your marks, get set, go.....!!!!

Today sees the start of the 2011 Suffolk Coastal Petanque League, so it's good luck to all the teams who have stuck to the issued fixture lists and are playing today.

Look out for the first results to appear on this website first.

Spectator Seating installed at Kingston Field, Woodbridge

Thanks to further monies provided via the Local Councillors Locality Budgets through Suffolk County Council, the Kingston Playing Fields piste at Woodbridge, has had spectator seating installed ready for the new season.

This raises the seating capacity of the piste to.....4.....maybe 5 if you all ''budge up''!!

Now included in the Team Ipswich Sports Guide

Our application to get our leagues contact details into the Team Ipswich Sports Guide has been successful and we are now included, along with our website details. The Sports Guide can be accessed via Team Ipswich and/or Ipswich Borough Councils website.

Hopefully this will help interested persons, who search out petanque via the Team Ipswich/IBC websites, to get in touch and be able to find out more information.

More Registrations

Today we received our 41st registration for the 2011 season and during the course of tomorrow before the registration event, we believe another 4 registrations are coming bringing us to an expected 45 teams prior to the evenings entertainment, starting at 7.30pm in the Huntingfield Village Hall.

The identities of these remaining teams will remain clouded in a veil of secrecy until tomorrow evening (as we want to keep a few surprises up our sleeves!!)

And of course, we may also have other teams turn up to register tomorrow night that we are not even currently aware of!!

Coastal League Pre-Season Training

'Bear-ly' six days left until Registration Night and everybody is getting in some pre-season practice. We caught up with Ted, Rupert, Winnie etc during a 'paws' in their practice session, they told us the 'grizzly' truth about their forthcoming season.

Ted wanted to know ''who had been using his boules'', Rupert was displying the new team kit of red jumper and fetching checked yellow trousers and matching scarf, Winnie was slightly ''browned off'', Paddington was back from his recent petanque playing experience in deepest Peru, Yogi was enjoying a combination of both boules and ''pick-a-nick baskets'' and Ursa said the social side of the league was a ''major'' reason for signing on.

Joint spokesmen for the team, Bungle and Fozzie, who both have plenty to say, said it was a league ''claws'' for everybody to play and enjoy your boules regardless of win, lose or draw.

Thank you to the members of the Alde-bear-a team for the interview.

Less Than A Week Left Till Registration

Yes, we are now entering the last week for registrations to be received for the 2011 Suffolk Coastal Petanque League, culminating in our Registration Night being held this Friday 11th February at Huntingfield Village Hall, from 7.30pm onwards.

Registration is just £12 per team (based on a minimum of 4 players) and you can either enter before the Registration event (like 40 teams already have done) or you are welcome to come along on Friday night.

Any registrations received after Friday 11th February cannot be accomodated as fixture lists are required to be issued by the evening of Sunday 13th February.

Membership rises to 40 teams

Welcome to the Cratfield Poacher, who have re-registered for the new 2011 season. This now means that we start the season with 8 divisions in what is now, officially, the largest league in the Anglia Region.

Caption Competition

As there are hundreds of visitors to this website every single month and yet very few comments ever left, I thought we'd have a Caption Competition where you can enter your caption by clicking the comment pencil beneath.

The winner will be adjudged by myself and announced at next weeks Registration Night at Huntingfield Village Hall on Friday 11th February. Mystery prize for the best caption.

Thinking caps on.....

Brrrrr!!!..Winter Woolies event

Sunday 30th January saw the entire membership of the newly formed Christchurch Park Boules Club turn up for a 3 hour stint at ''The Triangle'' piste located within the park, as part of their pre-season practice.

Also in attendance was a couple of ladies representing a possible further location that are planning to enter the league before the registration deadline date (but we aren't revealing their identity yet, as we like keeping a few surprises up our sleeves!!).

The weather was better than we had expected and everybody got to know one another much better as players swapped round partners and played on the variety of challenging undulations that the Christchurch piste offers.

Alternative Divisional Name for 2011

We try to reflect the Divisional names as being representative of the areas in which the competing teams play. However as the League continues its expansion the Divisional names need reviewing. There is such an increase of teams around the Woodbridge area that the Deben Division needs to be used for this area and is more appropriate than it being currently used for the Aldeburgh/Snape/Thorpeness/Aldringham grouping.

Therefore a new ''Alde Division'' will be created, with the Deben name used for nearer the Woodbridge area. This means that one of the previously proposed names for 2011 will be dropped. As there are a greater number of new teams in the Ipswich area, the Wolsey name will be used, with the Contable proposal being dropped.

2011 Sizing of Divisions and Priority Placement

Depending upon the final number of teams entered for the 2011 League programme by the time we reach our cut-off registration deadline date of Friday 11th February, we are likely to have a combination of 5-team and 6-team divisions.

With taking geographical location into account as well, it is only right that we try to give teams, who have previously been in 5-team divisions, the opportunity/priority to be placed into a 6-team division. Some teams in previous seasons have had the 5-team division scenario on them more often than others and therefore they will be given priority treatment when the drawing/allocating of the divisions in carried out.

In order of priority, these are the teams who have been in 5-team groups in the past;

Mill Inn Aldeburgh - 3 seasons
The Exiles Bealings - 2 seasons
Suivre Les Boules Playford - 2 seasons
Golden Key Snape (original team) - 2 seasons
Greyhound Pettistree (original team) - 2 seasons
Bell Inn Walberswick - 1 season in a 4-team group
3 Horseshoes North Cove - 1 season in a 4-team group
Harbour Inn Southwold - 1 season in a 4-team group
Hoxne Swan PC - 1 season in a 4-team group
Hollesley Shepherd & Dog - 1 season
Ye Olde Coach & Horses Melton - 1 season
Parrot & Punchbowl Aldringham - 1 season
Dolphin Thorpeness - 1 season

Whilst the above will be taken heavily into consideration, it may be that teams nearer the end of the list may still be allocated a 5-team division, but we will do our best.

The ''Original 9'' Back Together

With the receipt of the Harbour Inn Southwolds registration, for the first time since our inaugral 2008 season, we have all 9 original teams in the Coastal League for the 2011 league programme.

In 2009 Hoxne took a year out and then re-joined in 2010 having re-located to the Swan Inn, whilst Southwold themselves took the 2010 season off, but are back, ready to renew local rivalries with The Bell Inn Walberswick and such like.

A Welcome Return

With just 14 days left until the registration deadline, the Harbour Inn Southwold have officially registered, following a one season absence from the league.

The pub itself is now managed by Mr Nick Attfield, who was the instigator in getting the Golden Key Snape team up and running three seasons ago, and has now given himself the job of raising the Harbour team, like a phoenix from the ashes!!

So its a welcome back to one of the ''Original 9'' teams, who were Bronze Medalists in our 2008 inaugral season.

2011 Registration Night venue.....sorted!!

Friday 11th February 2011 sees everyones very last chance to register for this seasons Suffolk Coastal Petanque League and we are very pleased to announce that our Registration Night will be held at the Huntingfield Village Hall (directly opposite the Huntingfield Arms Public House IP19 0PU).

Start time is 7.30pm and we'd expect to be done within say 2 hours, so it will then be over to the pub for a few ''sherberts''.

On the night we will run through League rules, this years format and Play-Offs, we will hand out the Captains Handbooks and Scorecards to each team in attendance and generally answer any questions you may have.

Registration is £12 per team, consisting of a minimum of 4 players

**Please bring your own refreshments, food, alcohol for the village hall part of the evening**

Ipswich North Sea Trophy event one step closer

The proposed 'International Petanque' event scheduled for July, due to be held at Ipswich Haven Marina Waterfront involving members of our league versus a visiting contingent of Belgian players, took one huge step forward today, with notification that we had secured Grant Funding from the UCS Community Event Grant Scheme.

A meeting is currently being arranged with the Marina Manager to discuss the official approval and finer details of the event itself, with the remainder of the cost being covered by entry fees, League funding and event and programme sponsorship and advertising.

UCS are therefore our main ''Event Partners'', and for that we would like to thank them very much for their financial support.

That damned VAT increase

Due to ''some other persons'' intervention, our special league member discount with Foxs Chandlery at Wherstead, near Ipswich, has seen a slight increase in cost for a set of 8 leisure boules, due to VAT rising from 17.5% to 20%

The revised price is now £14.80 per set of 8 leisure boules (which is 2 boules each of 4 differing patterns). This cost includes the VAT and also a zip-up case in which the boules come in.

Still a bargain, especially as our league allows players to play with these slightly lighter and cheaper boules.

The Bull extends field!!

The Brantham Bull, this morning, have re-registered for the 2011 Suffolk Coastal Petanque League, bringing the number of teams now to 38.

We extend a warm welcome to Ransford, Cindy, Wendy and all the members of the Brantham team and wish them good luck as they start their second season in the league.

Just 3 Weeks Left!!

Thats right, there are just 3 weeks left until we close registration for the 2011 Suffolk Coastal Petanque League.

Due to our first set of matches scheduled to be played on Sunday 6th March, this means there is only 6 weeks until the vast majority of you play your first match of the new season.

It is not too late to register a team, just contact the League Co-Ordinator, at the e-mail address shown on the right hand side of this website.

Look out for further information (COMING SOON) on where Friday 11th Februarys Registration Night is actually going to be held.

Number 37.........Hoxne Swan PC

Bringing our numbers for the 2011 League season to 37 teams, today we received the Registration Fee from Hoxne Swan PC (original league members and Coastal League champions in 2008).

Welcome back to Hoxne.

This ensures that there will now be at least 7 divisions this season (with 5 containing 5 teams each and 2 divisions of 6 teams apiece). However there are still 4 other existing teams still expected to re-register between now and the 11th February deadline, which will mean the number of divisions and how many are in each one will change anyway.

''Winter Woolies'' Invite - Sunday 30th January 2011

To all new interested persons that aren't currently attached to any of our registered teams, you are invited to a Come & Try event on Sunday 30th January 2011 from 11am till 2pm, being held in Christchurch Park, Ipswich.

The event itself is completely free of charge and equipment is available to use. (If you already have boules, please feel free to bring these along).

The playing area, affectionately known as 'The Triangle' is located right in front of the Mansion Cafe, between Christchurch Mansion and the Round Pond.

We have formed the Christchurch Park Boules Club from an amalgamation of interest generated during the course of 2010 and are entering 2 teams into this seasons Coastal League. However within this set-up there are still 4 places left on offer to interested persons. There is a membership fee involved with joining this particular club but there may be players who may want to go off from this event and form their own team(s).

PLEASE REMEMBER THIS EVENT IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR EXISTING LEAGUE MEMBERS

Video Killed The Radio Star....No It Didn't!!!!!

Did any of you listen to BBC Radio Suffolk's Sports Report between 6pm and 7pm earlier this evening (Friday 14th January)??

If you didn't, then you missed out on our League Co-Ordinator being interviewed in an 8 minute feature on petanque and in particular the forthcoming 2011 Suffolk Coastal Petanque League. It turned out to be a great ''commercial'' for the current growth of interest in the sport and we hope it will see a flurry of further interest before the closing date for League Registration.

If you want to listen to the interview, log onto BBC Radio Suffolk website, select Sport option and you'll see the chance to listen to the entire one hour sports show. Our section starts around 45 minutes into the show, so you'll need to ''slide the bar'' along!!

Furthermore the radio station want to feature our results on a fortnightly basis and will be turning up at matches during the course of the season for ''on the spot'' interview segments. A further feather in the cap of our League.

Remaining Registration Fees

Please be aware of the following;

CLOSING DATE FOR REGISTRATIONS IS FRIDAY 11TH FEBRUARY 2011

League Registration Fee for 2011 is £12 per team for the season (as the Early Bird Discount Scheme expired at the end of November 2010)

Cheques/Postal Orders are to be made payable to ''Suffolk Coastal Petanque Alliance''

Registration Fees are to be sent to 18 Melville Road, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP4 1PN, marked for the attention of the League Co-Ordinator

Decisions, Decisions

Due to the expected 2011 membership, the number of divisions we hope to create and the geographical locations of teams, we need to know if venues with multiple teams wish for their teams to be kept together in the same division or whether, in the event of the teams being drawn out of a hat for league placement, that they are happy for their teams to possibly end up in different divisions.

Whilst teams might then end up in different divisions, we will ensure that the travelling distances aren't vastly increased from what they would have expected if they were in the same division.

Teams that need to make a decision are;

Golden Key Snape - 2 teams - Await decision but believe want to be seperate division allocation
Greyhound Pettistree - 2 teams - Decided to be in same division
Christchurch Park Boules Club - 2 teams - Decided to be in same division
Kings Head Laxfield - 3 teams - Decided to be in same division
Wheatsheaf Tattingstone - 3 teams - Decided to be in same division
Royal Oak East Bergholt - 2 teams - Decided to be in same division

Each venue has been given until the 31st January to advise us. If no decision is received by then, it will be assumed that they ARE in agreement that teams could be allocated different divisions where necessary.
