Eels Foot step into history

Following on from their Adnams Plate Final success the previous day, the Eels Foot Inn II went into the Grand Final semi-finals as, in theory anyway, the outsiders/underdogs. Having achieved runners-up spot in their own division and being awarded the Seed 12 position in the league's play-off format, the odds were stacked against the Eels Foot'ers.

In each successive round they faced a Divisional Winner, starting in the Last 16 against a well-fancied strong team in the shape of Parrot & Punchbowl Aldringham. However a fifth-game decider saw the Eels clip the Parrots wings and take their place in the Last 8.

There they came up against the newly formed yet very experienced Bromeswell Boules Club, who had somewhat a bad day at the office and came unstuck against the Eels by a scoreline of 4-0.

By this time the Eels Foot team had already reached the Adnams Plate Final, facing their own team-mates Eels Foot Inn I on the Saturday at Aldeburgh.

Having dispatched them by 3-1, it was onto the serious business of the Coastal Semi-Finals. Up first was Kettleburgh, who had won the Tally Ho division, and had only qualified on Thursday evening themselves by beating Crown Inn Snape 3-2 at Stowmarket.

With young Baillie Inglis playing like a seasoned adult (despite only being 7 years old), the Eels never let Kettleburgh in and sent them packing with a 4-0 victory, setting up the Coastal Final against Gt Finborough Chestnut Horse, who themselves had already secured the Adnams Cup the day before.

Some it was somewhat fitting that the Cup and Plate winners were now facing each other in the Coastal Grand Final and a real see-saw battle commenced. At the halfway point it was 1 game apiece and this deadlock remained in the second half, seeing the match reach 2-2 and a fifth game decider in front of the vast assembled and our corporate sponsors.

A tense game saw both teams moving the score peg but then Finborough got a six on end end to seemingly gain the upper hand. This however wasn't the case and the Eels fought back to reach 12 points and be holding with the match-winning boule. Surprisingly Finborough couldn't do anything about it and the Grand Final finished 13-9 to the Eels Foot.

A tremendous effort, having beaten 4 Divisional winners along the way, and becoming the lowest seed to ever win our Coastal Championship. Also great from a sponsors point of view as they become the first ever actual Adnams pub to win the Coastal title.

2014 Season Awards

Presented at the Grand Finals Weekend, the league introduced some new awards. Similar to the Oscars, and in tribute to one of the leagues original driving forces, the ''Jimmies'' were handed out as follows;

Friend of The League -

Mr Doug Benger (for his sterling work in co-ordinating results, league tables etc, all available by clicking the link on the right hand side)

Forwarding Petanque -

Eels Foot Inn Eastbridge (for promoting petanque by virtue of building an additional 4 pistes this season and hosting two very well attended tournaments, the Eels Cup and the Eels Melee)

Player of The Year -

Jointly presented to Mr Mark Adamson and Mr Paddy Rosseau (Parrot & Punchbowl) for their success in winning the 2014 Moules & Boules at Aldeburgh and the 2014 Eels Cup Plate competition, as well as being part of the Parrot team who won the Ghostship division this season

Application to Join our 2015 Season

Over the Grand Finals Weekend, attending teams and spectators were able to pick up the 2015 Application Forms, with the ability to sign up there and then at the Early Bird price of £15 per team.

From that offer 4 teams have already entered our 2015 season, but if you missed out on a form, please contact the League Co-Ordinator asap.

The Early Bird price runs until the 30th November, whereafter it rises to £20 per team until close of registration, scheduled for the first week of February 2015.

Adnams sign up for another two years

With the culmination of our 2014 season at the weekend with the honours of the Adnams Cup, Adnams Plate and overall Coastal Championship all settled, the various trophies from the season were awarded, very kindly by Mr Bradley Adnams, of our corporate sponsors, Adnams of Southwold.

Having withheld the ''secret'' news for a few weeks, the announcement was made to the assembled crowd of nearly 100 players and spectators, that Adnams have agreed to continue their sponsorship of the league for the 2015 and 2016 seasons respectively.

This is great news for the league and shows the belief that they have in our own ''petanque product'' and long may that continue.

New Piste @ Martlesham - Grand Opening

Saturday 6th September 2014

Martlesham Recreation Ground, old Woodbridge Road (near to Martlesham Red Lion)

Grand Opening at 2.30pm, please arrive for around 2/2.15pm

Everyone is welcome to come along and help out with a ''Learn To Play'' event, to officially open this newly built piste.

The local community has been invited and the local press will be in attendance.

2014 Play-Off Format

The format for the play-off seedings is as follows;

All Divisional Winners will be seeded from Seed 1 to Seed 8. This is done by dividing the number of league points won by the number of league matches played (because some divisions play 8 matches and some play 10 matches). This gives an average points per match ratio and the team with the highest average is Seed 1 and so on.
If teams are equal on this average, then the next deciding factor will be the number of games won minus the number of games lost, this gives a games difference and then also divide it by the number of matches played.

The same system is used for all divisional runners-up, who are then seeded as Seed 9 to Seed 16, with the best runner-up being Seeded 9.

The First Round of the play-offs will then be;

Seed 1 v Seed 16
Seed 2 v Seed 15
Seed 3 v Seed 14
Seed 4 v Seed 13
Seed 5 v Seed 12
Seed 6 v Seed 11
Seed 7 v Seed 10
Seed 8 v Seed 9

Please click on the League Results link and follow it to the Play-Off tree, to then see the ''Pre-Draw'' and who plays who in following rounds. Remember ALL play-off matches have to be played on ENTIRELY neutral pistes.

*Note - Due to the seeding process, you may play a team from your own division during the play-off stages.

Lewis Fletcher - England Junior International update

As part of Lewis' on-going involvement with the England Juniors, he and 5 other selected players are venturing out this week on Wednesday 27th August, to Slovakia, for the International Youth Petanque Camp 2014 at Kocovce, returning back to the UK on Sunday 31st.

Other countries attending this 3-day training camp are Slovakia, Austria, Germany and Hungary and it will be an intensive few days of high level coaching with some of the worlds top coaches. On the final day of the camp, there will be the opportunity to either attend a local tournament in the capital, Bratislava, or an in-house competition between the attending nations, with precision shooting also on the agenda.

This is the final event the England Juniors squad are taking part in before our coaches make the selection of the 4-player team for the European Championships, due to be held in France in November.

Grand Opening of new piste at Martlesham

There will be a ''Grand Opening'' of the new piste at Martlesham, on Saturday 6th September, at 2.30pm.

It has been recently completed and league members, and other interested persons, are invited to attend and have a ''try out'' on the new surface.

We are hoping that this will effectively be a ''Learn To Play'' event, so league members are asked to lend their assistance if possible.

For further information please email the League Co-Ordinator.

Eels slip past Aldeburgh and into Adnams Plate Final

14th August 2014 - Adnams Plate Semi-Final @ Dolphin Inn, Thorpeness

Riding on the crest of the wave following the success of last weeks tournament at their home venue, the Eels Foot Inn 1 team made the short journey to Thorpeness to face the Mill Inn Aldeburgh in the Adnams Plate Semi-Final.

In the first two tense games, the Eels won a close encounter 13-10 whilst on the other piste, a 90 minute game saw the Mill win 13-12 leaving the match delicately poised.

In the third match Aldeburgh were 10-0 up, only to end up as 13-12 losers. This left the fourth game the possible decider and another long game ended in almost near darkness, with the Eels team squeezing past the Mills stubbornness and finishing 13-9, to win 3-1 overall.

The match had started at just after 6.30pm and was completed around 9pm, fortunately not having to go to a 5th game decider.

The Eels Foot Inn 1 now face their clubmates, Eels Foot Inn 2 in the Adnams Plate Final, to be played at Aldeburgh at the end of September.

2014 Captains Meeting - Friday 7th February

Our annual Captains Meeting will be held on Friday 7th February at the Huntingfield Village Hall (opposite the Huntingfield Arms), from 7.30pm. This will be the fourth time we've held it at Huntingfield and would like to thank them for allowing us to ''invade'' their village once again.

The meeting IS NOT an AGM-style meeting, as we aim to keep the league as informal and sociable as possible.

However we would point out that the meeting is only intended for a teams' captain or their appointed stand-in, so teams do not need to turn up ''mob-handed''. Any decisions made during the evening will stand and if any vote is required on any matter, a one-vote-per-team rule will apply. (For those of you who still get confused, a venue that has two teams will therefore get two votes).

On the evening, we will agree and draw from a hat if necessary, the league groupings. Teams that are located ''out on the limb'' will be allocated a group that attempts to minimise their travelling where possible but bear in mind, that is determined by which teams enter.

We will also carry out the draw for the First Round of the 2014 Adnams Cup (for the 32 teams that said yes to entering the Cup) and will be providing the pre-drawn knock-out sheet for the Cup, Plate and Play-Off matches format.

Other information available on the evening will include;
  • Belgium/Holland trip 2014
  • KYCN visit to Ipswich/Shotley
  • Moules & Boules Charity Pairs Tournament at Aldeburgh
  • 3rd Eels Cup Pairs Tournament

We currently have 40 teams lined up for our league season and Adnams Cup competitions, so it's a big thank you and welcome to all those that have returned forms and fees already.

Lewis selected for 2014 England Junior squad

Again, we can report the progress of the Leagues' star junior player, Lewis Fletcher, who attended an England Juniors coaching day two weeks before Christmas, and from the countrys' 28 junior players who attended, he has been subsequently selected in the first 14 players that make up this coming seasons England Junior squad, making this his third season of being involved at England international level.

Lewis capped last season by captaining the England Juniors at the World Championships in France, when the team won 3 out of their 7 matches, including a strength-sapping 2.5 hour knock-out match versus Slovakia, that England eventually won 13-12.

He will now undergo further coaching days as the EPA develops the players ready for more international duty later in the season, which could include the OJM International Invite tournament in Nieuweggin, Holland during Easter, the International Triples in Kayl, Luxembourg usually in July and possible selection into the England Junior team to compete at the 2014 European Junior Championships due to be held in Bassens, France in early November.

Good luck and fingers crossed....

Adnams Coastal Petanque League - European Trip Part III - 2014

As has now become tradition, our League departs during the early part of May, bound for Belgium and as of last season, Holland as well, in our annual European Tour.

From Friday 2nd May until either Monday 5th (or Tuesday 6th) May, we will hopefully travel through the Channel Tunnel to our base in Middelkerke, on the Belgian coast. From there we will visit two, three or maybe possibly four separate venues over the trip for matches against Belgian and Dutch opposition. (It is also being investigated as to whether a match on French soil can be included).

We should be in a position to provide costings shortly but don't expect them to be much different than in previous years.

If you'd like to seriously be considered in coming on this trip, please contact the League Co-Ordinator as soon as possible, as we need to confirm with the bus hire company, Eurotunnel, the hotel and our various hosts as to the number of people expected.

You may decide to travel by your own methods but you will still need to pay me for the hotel and a contribution towards the cost of gifts for our hosts. If travelling with the League Co-Ordinator, we will be planning to take either a 9-seater people carrier, or if numbers require, a 17-seater mini-bus. If more numbers confirm, then we will arrange a small coach with a designated driver.

Application to Enter the 2014 Season

Applications to enter our 2014 season are currently being taken and as of 2nd January 2014, we have received 18 teams, all of whom have indicated their preference to compete in the Adnams Cup competition as well as the main league format.

Our ''Early Bird'' price scheme is still at £15 per team for the entire 2014 season, but this offer will expire on Friday 10th January 2014.

The price will then rise to £20 per team from 11th January until the Captains Meeting set for 8th February when ALL applications need to have been received by.

Should you need Application Forms, please contact the League Co-Ordinator and beat the ''price rise''.
